Lahore is the capital city of the Pakistani province of Punjab. It is the second largest and most populous city in Pakistan, after Karachi, and the 32nd most populous urban city in the world. Lahore is one of Pakistan’s wealthiest cities with an estimated total nominal GDP of $58.14 billion as of 2014.

DEMOGRAPHY OF LAHORE:

The main religion in Lahore is Muslim – mostly Sunni or Shia- which makes up 94% of the population. The remaining 6% are nearly all Christians. There are also a small number of minority religions such as Sikh and Hindu.
Of the people in Lahore, 87% of them speak Punjabi but that too in different dialects making it a diverse speaking population area. Other languages spoken include Urdu – the national language, and English – which is spoken and understood by a large number of people. According to the 1998 census, 86.2% or 6,896,000 of the population are Punjabis; 10.2% or 816,000 are Urdu speakers and the Seraikis, at 0.4%, number about 32,000.
Lahore is a young country with over 40% of its inhabitants below the age of 15. The average life expectancy stand at less than 60 years of age. Another interesting statistic is that less than 40% of the population of the city are literate.

POPULATION DENSITY AND GROWTH RATE IN LAHORE:

Lahore’s population has almost doubled over the last 12 years from 5.14 million in 1998 to about 9 million at present and is expected to cross 11.25 million by 2020 if it keeps growing at the current rate – 2.05 per cent. It was only 2.9 million in 1981 census.

The population density in Lahore is 3,566 / sq.km.
